Medical examinations

In certain professions and industries medical examinations are mandatory. With an examination you comply with legal requirements and keep your people healthy and fit for work with high safety and health risks. Regulations change often, and in international waters it is not always clear which rules apply. We know what you need to comply with and schedule examinations without a waiting list.

Offshore examinations (NOGEPA and OEUK)

Do you work offshore, on a drilling platform or an offshore wind farm? Then you must undergo a periodic medical examination. Because offshore workers face high health and safety risks, their physical and mental health is of great importance.

In the Dutch sector of the North Sea the NOGEPA standard for medical examinations applies. The industry association NOGEPA has been called Element NL since 2022, but its standards keep the NOGEPA name. A NOGEPA examination is valid for two years. In the UK sector the examination of Offshore Energies UK (OEUK), formerly Oil & Gas UK (OGUK), applies. Our NOGEPA and OEUK certified examining physicians perform the examinations at a time that suits you.

You complete a questionnaire in advance. The physician performs a physical examination, measures blood pressure, height and weight, checks eyes and ears and tests your urine. On approval you receive a medical certificate or a stamp in your safety logbook.

Seafarer, inland navigation and boat licence examinations

Do you work at sea or in inland navigation, or are you studying at a maritime college? Then you must be medically examined periodically. Our certified physicians examine according to the guidelines of the Dutch Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT). Directly after the examination you receive the seafarer medical certificate, valid for two years, or the inland navigation medical certificate.

For a qualification in inland navigation, such as a large boat licence, Rhine patent or service record book, you need a valid inland navigation medical certificate. The small boat licence has its own rules; our physicians advise you on them without obligation.

In inland navigation the re-examination follows the validity of your qualification document. The EU certificate of qualification is renewed every 13 years and also when you turn 60, 65 and 70. From age 70 it is renewed every two years.

What to bring

  • A valid identity document
  • Your glasses and/or contact lenses
  • Any medication in its original packaging
  • Your service record book, if you have one
  • The completed questionnaire
Students of maritime colleges receive a student discount on the seafarer examination.

Driving licence examinations C and D and taxi pass examination

A medical driving licence examination assesses whether you can safely take part in traffic. For professional drivers we pay extra attention to hearing and eyesight. The examination takes 15 minutes. Applying for, replacing or renewing a professional licence (C, D and the trailer combinations CE and DE) always requires an examination by a physician. A professional licence is valid for five years.

For the taxi driver card, which is valid for five years, you need a taxi medical certificate. You submit it to Kiwa Register.

First you obtain a medical report or health declaration from the CBR (via mijn.cbr.nl with DigiD, or at some municipalities). The physician records the findings in it. MediWerk works with a ZorgDomein code, so the physician can submit the report to the CBR digitally, which shortens the processing time considerably. The CBR then decides whether you may drive. Start early so your licence does not expire.

What to bring

  • Medical report or health declaration from the CBR
  • Your medication or a medication overview, if applicable
  • Glasses and/or lenses, including fluid
  • Identity document
  • For the taxi pass examination: the Kiwa medical declaration
From age 75, renewing a category B licence also requires an examination by a physician. If you have a medical condition, the CBR decides whether a specialist is needed. Follow-up appointments, for example when the medical report or medication list was missing, are charged separately.

Our physicians also perform examinations for other industries. If you work in construction, transport or soil remediation you can come to us for soil remediation examinations, crane operator examinations, compressed air examinations and asbestos worker examinations, among others.

Work in or with contaminated soil or groundwater requires a soil remediation examination. Its content depends on the respiratory protection you use: A without respiratory protection, B with ambient-air-dependent protection such as a full face mask, C with independent breathing air.
